Please write two paragraphs (a paragraph is a group of sentences) as follows:
First Paragraph
Assess yourself as a reader, writer, and learner. Your response should consider the following:
What is your attitude toward reading and writing and your comfort level with them?
How do you see yourself as a reader? What do you do well as a reader? What, if anything, do you struggle with? Consider comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking, and other reading skills.
How do you see yourself as a writer? What do you do well as a writer? What, if anything, do you struggle with? Consider organizing and developing ideas, grammar and word choice, being able to write on an assigned topic, and other writing skills.
How do you see yourself as a learner? What do you do well as a learner? What, if anything, do you struggle with? Consider time management, willingness to communicate/ask for help, problem-solving, and other study skills.
Second Paragraph
Assess your preparedness for this course. Your response should consider the following:
When was the last time you took an English class? What was that experience like for you?
Have you written essays previously? How did they turn out?
Have you worked with sources and/or conducted research previously?
As a reminder, students enter this course from a variety of backgrounds. Struggling in (and loathing) high school English classes, finding essays difficult and assigned readings boring, grappling with the intricacies of English as a second or third language, and taking this class after years away from school are all fairly common experiences, and so there is no reason to feel ashamed if they happen to be your experiences. However, it is important to recognize potential challenges early on so that you may work toward conquering them during the next sixteen
Formatting a Document
Writing assignments should contain the following page formatting:
12 point Times New Roman font
Double spacing
Indentation (using the Tab key) at the beginning of each paragraph
Your name, your instructor’s name, the course, and the date in the upper left corner
Page numbers in the upper right corner
Titles centered (remember to return to left-aligning below the title)
The following resource from Valencia College (Links to an external site.) shows how to apply this formatting to a Microsoft Word document. Please begin on page four. This resource addresses the Office 365/cloud-based version of Word. A few buttons (namely, line and paragraph spacing) may appear in different locations in the desktop app version, but the same formatting can be applied using either version.
